Chapter 8

Three days later I made it back to work, and just like I suspected, my desk was covered with case upon case of paperwork.

“Eli, get your ass in here,” Sarge screamed out. He was always screaming about something and it was never something I wanted to deal with.

I got up slowly and walked over to the door, “Yeah, Sarge.”

“I hear you were part of that attempted robbery in the donut store?”

“Yeah, not really, I thought all that was handled.”

“It will be, but unfortunately, I just heard that the perp got bail. I’m sure that he’ll come back for trial, but I just wanted to make sure that you kept your eyes open.” He turned to go back to his computer.

“Wait a minute, wait. What about Amy? Did anyone let her know?”

“Who?”

“Who? What the hell do you mean, who? Amy! The woman who owns the donut shop he attempted to rob. Did anyone notify her the perp was back on the street?” I was beyond pissed off. This is exactly what the problem was with the system; no one did their due diligence.

“Oh yeah, we put in a call to her. She’s aware of everything going on.”

I pushed my hands through my hair. This shit couldn’t be happening, “What do you think a call is going to do? Did you send anyone to watch over her place?”

“No, that isn’t protocol.”

“Fuck protocol, send someone.”

Sarge turned around and looked at me, “Mirren, I’m going to let that one go with this single warning. Watch that insubordinate tone.”

I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. Sarge was right sending someone to go watch Amy was against protocol. It actually could do more harm than good.

“You’re right, I’m sorry, boss. It’s just that I know that woman. I don’t want anything to happen to her.”

“It’s going to be fine Eli, he’s a low-level criminal. I’m sure he doesn’t want to get into more trouble than he is already.”

I had no choice but to nod and go back to my desk.

I picked up the case folder and began to dive deep into the facts. The perp was Isaac Janson, he was an Ivy League boy who somehow ended up on the wrong side of a gambling debt. The gambling debt brought on drug use; the drug use brought on more debt. It was a long rap sheet of drug use, burglary, and more recently, drug trafficking. Based on his time served he appeared like he was low level, but the fact that he was making a habit of trying to rip off little stores indicated he was in a little deeper than what we could see. Either he was running from someone higher up the food chain or he was desperate for cash.

I used every resource that I had available to me to ensure I had an ironclad case. I didn’t want to take the risk he’d be let off on a technicality. The fact there had been a fight between him
